While our yahoo group was closed for a year, we still had a handful of members who were keen to bead together in a round robin. We are sad to advise that the decision has been made to close our Beaded Art Doll group but we will continue to blog right here with beaded art dolls created by our BeadDreamz members.

Also, we have so many beautiful beaded dolls in our archives that it would be a shame to keep them hidden so we will be featuring some of those from time to time.

Our animal bead-along produced some beautiful beading and below are submissions from our members. They are so cute and versatile.

Can you believe it's been a whole year? We started a new type of bead-along in September, 2008 and it took off like wildfire! The object was to create one doll each month, and it continued through August, 2009. Now that the year is over, it's time to choose our favorite doll for the entire year!

It was hard to decide how to present the dolls that were submitted because each and every one was unique and beautiful. There were nearly 100 dolls submitted throughout the entire year. Great job group! But that was too many to fit into one poll. After much discussion, the decision was made. For the months of September, 2008 through February, 2009, we had a monthly favorites poll and a winner was chosen by the group members. Participation dwindled a bit after February, and so we had a favorites poll to choose a winner from the combined months of March and April 2009. Another poll chose a winner from the combined months of May through August 2009. This leaves us with the following 8 favorites, each having won one of the polls mentioned above. A poll will be created in the next day or so for group members to choose their favorite for the entire year. Without further ado, here are your finalists for the 2008-09 Beaded Art Dolls Calendar Bead-Along:

Give Us A Hand - Literally!

Beaded Art Dolls and our sister group, Beaddreamz, are running a bead-along together from August through October! During this bead-along, the task is to embellish a hand form, generally made of cloth, with beads. Members have taken it in hand (har har har) quite well and here are some of the pictures they've posted. Remember, we are just getting started! We'll post progress reports with pictures throughout the bead-along, so stay tuned! If you're not a member of the group and would like to join, see the links at the right. July Calendar Celebration

For those who may not know, July 4 is a very special holiday in the United States. It is the birthday of the Declaration of Independence, which brought about the beginning of the USA. Beautiful Babushkas Bead-Along!

Check out these beautiful Babushkas! Our members have harnessed their "inner Russians" to create these one-of-a-kind works of art. The bead-along was in progress during March/April/May and was extended a couple of weeks into June. The results were worth waiting for! Everyone did a wonderful job! Thanks to everyone who participated!

You may be thinking, "what is a babushka?" The word "babushka" has multiple meanings. It is the Russian word for Grandmother. It is also the word for a triangular headscarf, often worn by a Russian peasant woman. Many people use the word to describe Russian nesting dolls (see photo below), but the correct word for the dolls is actually "Matryoshka."

Spread the Love Swap

In February 2009, some of our more romantic members wanted to celebrate Valentine's Day by beading a small doll to 'Spread the Love'. Jena, generously hosted this lovely project and clearly enjoyed her topic so much, she just couldn't stop. Some of the ladies just wanted to bead a doll for keeping, or secretly gifting to a very special loved one, whilst others beaded a little loving creation to swap with a beady buddy from the group. I think you will agree, the results are a beautiful tribute to the sentiment of Valentine's Day and will forever be a reminder of a loving occasion and beautiful friends.

Aponi is Rosalie's doll in the Four Season's Round Robin. Seven women beaded this wonderful doll. Rosalie received the doll form from Ralonda, the hostess of this round robin, as a birthday present, so Aponi is doublely special to her owner. Congratulations to all who created this fantastic creature. She is a masterpiece.

Here are Rosalie's comments about Aponi:

"Aponi is a Native American word meaning 'Butterfly' I love spring and all of the new things coming out of the ground, all different colors, new birth etc. She was beaded by Jena, Kathleen, Karol, Ann, Gail, & Dian, she left my house naked because I thought my dog ate her face, but later found it under my bed, but she had already been sent off. I adore her and she has been to 3 Dr Offices with me, so many nurses have threatened to swipe her. I love the idea that she was beaded by friends. She will be displayed in a recycled pop bottle cut in half and placed over a wooden base and placed in my bead room that is coming together very well."

Selah Is Home!!!!!

Ralonda's Selah has arrived home. Isn't she gorgeous? Ralonda was hostess for this Round Robin. She did a fantastic job and handled all of the problems with ease. Thank you, Ralonda, for truly making this Beaded Art Doll event a memorable experience for all the beaders involved.

Here is what Ralonda has to saw about being the hostess:

"I just wanted everyone to know that I may have hosted but it truly was a feat for the ladies for 14 women to coordinate efforts to complete 14 beautiful dolls. This was the biggest effort I have heard of for beaded dolls. You all stepped up and did your part. Even with two dolls lagging behind a little it is still promising to be the biggest group accomplishment so far. It is a wonderful experience to see everyones abilities and to add your own to the mix. You begin to get a feel for each others work and can almost identify who did what. The journals were a lot of fun for me too."

September Calendar Dolls

For this bead-along, members will create a beaded doll each month using a theme of their choice and very few guidelines. The first month has seen a lovely selection of dolls and we look forward to viewing more fabulous work in ensuing months.

Global Warming Bead-a-long

Sue R. has just finished her Global Warming Doll and here is what Sue has to say about the doll and its meaning:

"Her name is "Ghost Turtle Mother". She represents the potential loss of the majority of turtle species worldwide and in dramatically different environments, due to global warming. Her final layer consists of turtle ghosts cut from mica. These nearly transparent ghosts are difficult to photograph. There are 16 ghosts altogether.

Turtle species are threatened in all corners of the world.Sea turtles will lose most of their nesting beaches to higher sea levels. Because female turtles return to the beach where they were hatched to lay their eggs, there will be little movement of nesting beaches. In addition, a very small rise (as little as 2 to 5 degrees F.) in nest temperature will result in almost all female hatchlings, seriously threatening reproduction. It has also been shown that a couple of degrees rise in the temperature of sea water greatly increases the growth of a particular form of cancerous tumors that grow on the faces and mouths of sea turtles. Kelp is dependent on a narrow range of water temperature. Juvenile turtles are believed, by many, to spend years in kelp forests before they reach adulthood. Loss of juvenile habitat is just one more threat.

On land, and in fresh water, global warming also threatens turtle species. Nest temperature affects gender in land and fresh water turtles as well as sea turtles, resulting in all female nests. Since many fresh water, and land turtles are herbivores, the loss of pollinators due to global warming could drastically reduce the supply of fruit, like the Opuntia fruit on the desert side of the doll, and other plant material, making it harder for them to find enough food. Turtle migration northward appears to have already begun. However, turtles move slowly, and might not be able to move far enough north in time. In addition, migration would, in many parts of the world, necessitate crossing roadways, which would produce a serious threat from cars.

The possibility of the loss of most of the world's turtles to global warming is a very real threat. They've been around for over 300 million years, and could be gone in a matter of decades.

I tried to make my doll of all natural materials, but had to make 2 exceptions. Her body is made of 100% wool felt, and stuffed with recycled wool roving. The beads used (except for her faces, whose content I don't know) are glass. The turtle "ghosts" are cut from mica. She is sewn with nylon thread, a necessary material to insure that she lasts a long time.

I hope you like her as much as I enjoyed making her."

These are the 14 dolls created for a Round Robin. For those who do not know what a Round Robin is, it is where one person creates a doll and mails it to other people on a list, who bead a part of the doll. In this case, there are 14 members who created their own doll. The 14 were then divided into two groups with seven in each group. The seven then bead one seventh of each doll. It is completed when it reaches the owner after many months. This one started this summer and should finish sometime in February. All fourteen dolls will be gorgeous when they return home. Don't you agree?

Dian's Global Warming

July to September are the months for our members to consider Global Warming and hosting our bead-along is Robin Atkins. Robin has set the scene for us with thoughts and inspiration from her new book and members are busily beading away the months with their interpretation. First to finish is Dian with her gorgeous little tree. We look forward to more dolls with great anticipation.

We also have fourteen members enjoying our current Round Robin which started last month. It's early days yet but the dolls are looking exciting. Here are just a few of the dolls as an example of the first stage of their journey.

There wasn't a vote on the favorite and everyone knew that before starting. The creativity of this group is exceptional, as shown by the difference in the completed dolls. Hello to Visitors and Members!!!

BAD (Beaded Art Dolls yahoo group) and BDZ (Bead Dreamz yahoo group) have a lot to offer in the way of challenges and swaps and if you are interested in participating, please make sure you are a member so that you can join in. Links to our groups are on the right hand side of this blog.

BAD July/August/September Bead-along - I am aware that members are busy with their Symbolic Class Doll and Four Seasons Round Robin preparations but I would like to remind you that in July we intend to start a new bead-along, inspired by Robin Atkins. Robin has generously offered to introduce a special project to BAD and will give a helping hand and share her ideas with us along the way. I am hoping that members who are doing the Symbolic class will be eager to participate and put their new knowledge into practice.

BAD Puzzle Piece Doll Bead-along has ended and produced wonderful results. I am so proud of everyone and their work. I hope YOU have voted.

BAD Sampler Doll Bead-along is still in progress, finishing at the end of this month. Jeanne certainly placed a real challenge before us when she specified a beaded face. Well, we seem to be managing it with a varying degree of skill and having a giggle at the same time.

BDZ Magic Carpet challenge is almost finished. Moderators made a decision a little while ago that any challenge with less than 10 entries would not have a poll for voting on our favorite. It seems a shame when there are so many beautiful carpets. If any member would like to comment on this, please feel free.

BDZ Spring Panel Swap/Challenge finishes at the end of June and we probably won't see photos until after the swap. These darling little panels are something to look forward to.

BDZ starts a new challenge/instructions/bead-along on July 1 which is a freeform bracelet and ring with Aryd'ell and Sharon Harry. Don't forget to sign up.

BDZ also has a special challenge/swap running September 21 to mid November hosted by Debra Pyeatt. If you want to learn from an exceptional beader, you must sign in for this one.

Always remember that if you have any ideas, suggestions or comments regarding our groups, we love to hear from you. We need your input to make these groups interesting and fun.

Monochromatic Puzzle Dolls

Since some members complained about making a yellow puzzle doll, a lottery was created so that the members could not pick what color they could use for their project. The guidelines were to use only one color of bead. This portion of the challenge was much harder than using yellow with a 10% contrast color. As you can see from the above slide, everyone did fantastic using a monochromatic color scheme.

New on Beaded Art Dolls

This month and next Beaded Art Doll members will be very busy. A Beads and Babes swap just ended on May 15th. The swap was hosted by Ralonda and 21 members participated. In one month Ralonda collected and distributed an assortment of bare dolls, beads, and cabs quite efficiently with minimal problems. Congratulations Ralonda on a job well done. Watch this space for pictures of the finished dolls. Most of the members are just starting on the dolls that they have received so check back often as it may be awhile before the results are shown here.

Example of Beads and Babe Swap

Kristen has generously offered to teach an online class in Symbolic Doll Making for the group. There are 58 members signed up and with the deadline still a week away, there may be even more. If you haven't signed up as of yet, please do so as the deadline is May 22nd. This is only open to members of the Beaded Art Doll group. She is planning on having everyone learn the meaning of symbols in beads and found objects, plus other things too numerous to mention here. The participants will make their own dolls, while using symbols to create a story through beading.

Kristen's Journeys - A symbolic doll

There is also a Sampler Doll Bead-a-long happening this month. The group will bead a small doll with six different stitches and colors. They will also learn to bead a face instead of using a cab and beading around the cab. The results of this doll should be quite interesting, as many of the members don't bead the entire face.

Occasionally between challenges, bead-a-longs, round robins, and swaps, one member will create a doll that sparks interest in all members. Tammy did that the other day with her "Going in Circles" cone doll. Wondering how it was made, Jackie started making a doll form like Tammy's, but in a slightly different color and smaller. While there aren't finished pictures to show you, enclosed are three pictures in their beginning stages. It is being posted on the group that other members are either buying the form like Tammy's or making their own. It will be very interesting to see what each member that joins in decides to design from the simple cone form.

Julia's First Doll

Julia joined Beaded Art Dolls because of her love of beads. She creates fabulous beaded jewelry, but had never beaded a doll and didn't know if she would ever design her own. She chatted with all the other members about loving the work she saw in the group's albums. It wasn't long before Julia made the decision to create her own beaded art doll.

Congratulations are in order, not only to Julia, but to all of our members who gave her and other new doll makers the inspiration and encouragement to finish their first doll. Julia's doll, featured below, is well rounded and beautifully beaded.

Instead of three favorites for the Arsenic and Old Lace Challenge, there are four, due to a tie for third place. 2008 Face Pin Mini Challenge

In the slideshow above are the images that were created in the 2008 Face Pin Mini Challenge. Because so many members of this group finished their Arsenic and Old Lace Dolls way ahead of the alloted time, the mini challenge was born. Everyone that participated was asked to use a large cabochon and make a pin or a necklace. The results are spectacular, don't you agree? Arsenic & Old Lace Challenge

Beaded Art Doll members designed a doll loosely based upon the theme of the old movie, "Arsensic and Old Lace," starring Cary Grant. There were two requirements for this challenge. Each doll had to have lace on it and have at least 50% of it covered with beads. Congratulations to all who participated. Well done!!!!! While all the beaders are considered winners just by attempting this feat, the group will have a poll to decide which dolls are their top three favorites. Face Pin Mini Challenge

Because so many of our members finished the Arsensic and Old Lace Doll Challenge early, a mini challenge was created. The pictures at left are some of the results of this event. There are the whimsical and the elegant. Some of the faces are made into pendants and some are pins. The creators are as follows from top to bottom: Ralonda, Julia, Rosalie, Jo, Maggie, and Sunni. All of this artistry is a fine example of how one idea given to artistisans produces such distinct designs.

The Four Seasons by Lynn Manning

The owner of this group, Lynn, has created 4 dolls to
depict the seasons. There is Bonnie Springtime
on the far right. Suzie Summer is next dressed in
pink and green. Aud Autumn is looking fine in an ensemble of warm hues. Last is Winni-peg Winter in icy blue. Lynn likes Ms. Winter best, but the group is in agreement that all four are fantastic and shows the true artistry of our group leader. It took Lynn over two years to complete this set and we send our sincerest congratulations on finishing this excellent example of beaded art dolls.

Valentine's Beaded Doll Swap

This year our group hosted a Valentine's Day Swap. Eighteen members participated, each creating a tiny beaded doll to send to their partner. Here are some of the eighteen dolls created in this exchange. We still have just a few more to come which will be added later.

Doll Face Pin - Mini Challenge

Beaded Art Dolls Group is running a mini challenge for members during the months of February and March which is intended to be a quick and easy project for those interested. Many members will have a face cabochon in their stash which is much loved but was found to be too large to added to a beaded doll. What a great opportunity to bead up that favorite! As usual, wonderful beaded objects are anticipated as a result of this challenge with many new pins and pendants being on display at the end of the challenge.

Despite the fact that we had many beginners to freeform beading, our members produced this wonderful array of dolls.
